LIVING WELL
The Living Well center, also known as the Parent Child Center, is a training center at Loaves and Fishes. At the Living Well, we offer a variety of classes to not only to our Emergency Shelter guest, but also to the women at the Escambia County Jail, Waterfront Rescue Mission and the community at large.
Twice a week, mothers and children who are staying at our shelter come to morning classes from 9-12pm. These classes focus on inner healing and issues of the heart. During these classes we discuss topics, which range from Hope in the Midst of Crisis, Stress and Children and Wounds of the Heart. These classes are designed to allow the ladies to see their lives in a different way in order to reveal the issues that have brought them to where they are today. God's Word is our resource and foundation in every session. After class, each guests is taken into a one on one counseling session for further discussion and prayer.
As an added benefit to our shelter guest, we also offer a Mom's Day Out each Wednesday for the younger children who are not in school. For the school age children, we have an After School Program, which includes tutoring, crafts, snack and Bible study. All of these programs are designed to help the children during their time of need and adjustment at the shelter.
Another exciting class we offer is Life Skills. This class is also offered to our shelter guests as well as to the women at Waterfront Rescue Mission and the Escambia County Jail. These classes cover practical life lessons such as Dealing with Failure, Setting Priorities, Filling Out Applications, Why Work? and Budgeting. Life Skills is vital in restoring the ladies back into the work world and home life.
Parenting is class which we teach every semester for fifteen weeks. This class is based on how to train up a child God's Way. Topics covered in this class are Tying Strings/Bonding, Discipline and Love and Boundaries as well as Nutrition, Safety and Child Development. An abbreviated Parenting class is offered for ten weeks on Monday nights and at the Escambia County Jail.
Since the Living Well program began in September 2001, we have served an average of 83 families and 44 children per month. If you are interested in volunteering at the Living Well, please contact us at 850-438-7616. Thank you in advance!
